Nick Witham, PhD is the Chief Technology Officer and co-founder of Pioneering Deep Tech Institute.
PhD in Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering, University of Utah (2024); MS Bioengineering (2021); BS Biomedical and Healthscience Engineering, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2018). NINDS T32 Predoctoral Fellow 2020–2022 in the Development of Novel Interventions for Neurological and Neurobehavioral Disorders.
R&D Mechatronics Engineer at Blackrock Neurotech, developing biosensor and actuator systems for brain-computer interfaces and assistive devices.
Founded Gaia Technologies in 2019 - gesture sensing sockets, subvocalization headsets, prosthetic hands, twisted coiled polymer artificial muscles. Co-founded Heimdall Health (2019–2024), the Mapping Otoscope team. Led the TCP Muscles research effort at the University of Utah Microsystems Laboratory 2018–2024 biomimetic textile artificial muscles for biomedical and robotic applications. Co-led the 109-part mechatronic prosthetic design transfer at URI with Andrew Piskadlo.
Patents: high-density distance sensor array for upper-limb prosthesis control; on-demand sperm testing, delivery and storage; otoscope; twisted coiled polymer (MFTCP) actuators for biomedical applications.
Selected publications: flexible 320-channel ECoG array with hybrid macro/micro-electrode design for epilepsy monitoring; continuous textile manufacturing method for twisted coiled polymer artificial muscles; flexible high-resolution thin-film electrodes for human and animal neural research.
